Batman Beyond

Recently, I went to download the complete series of Batman Beyond, a really old cartoon I used to watch. It came after the The New Batman Adventures, and it portrayed Bruce Wayne as an old man, mentoring a new Batman.

I have to admit, despite my love for the current Batman, I really like the Batman of the future too. I was really impressed with how they created this whole new character from scratch, and the plot to make it that way. And that is why the first two episodes of the Batman Beyond series are the most amazing(and important) episodes to me.

The first few minutes show how Bruce Wayne, whose age was catching up with him, decided to end his career as Batman. Needing to rely on the one thing he swore off, Bruce Wayne realizes that he could no longer fight crime as Batman. This idea, to me, was a really smart situation to make him end his Batman career. Because apart from that, there's possibly no other way to reach that conclusion.

We then move to the future, where we get to meet Terry McGinnis. And the driving point to make that kid want to be Batman: avenge the death of his father.

I somehow cannot help but to feel that it seems rather similar to how Spider-man decided that "With great power, comes great responsibility". Kid comes home, only to find his dad/uncle dead, regrets his last words to his old man, and dons the costume to get vengeance.

In this series, we see Terry juggling his teenage life and life as Batman, not something you get to see with the present-day Batman. This gives a... fresh new feeling of watching Batman. I have to admit, the series is good such that it shows a rookie superhero matures and become the Batman worthy of continuing the legacy.

The best part is that, even after the end of the series, a final episode in the Justice League Unlimited animated series actually acted as a closure for Batman Beyond.

Batman Beyond is somewhat darker, where people are implied to be killed, and plots are not as light-hearted. One good example was the movie, Return of the Joker. However, this series has proven to have really interesting storylines, making it one of the most impressive
