VS System TCG

Well, because I'm sick of studying, I decided to take a break and write a post about this card game. VS System started a long time ago, and as much as it tried to survive, it just never manage to capture people's interest. Which I fail to understand.

VS System allows you to use your favourite heroes, villains and teams in Marvel comics and DC comics, with a few others such as Hellboy. But mostly Marvel and DC. Today I found a card shop that sold this X-men starter deck for $10 (it was $15 long ago) and this deck box which was actually not for sale because the guy did not know how much it would cost now. That is how old this game is.

I like the Justice League deck box! Artwork by Alex Ross! Saw a guy having this a few months back and now I finally got one for myself!

To talk about this card game, I decided to show this starter deck as an example. I already bought one of this way back, but I decided to buy one more... just for fun. Anyway, in this box holds 2 decks, ready-made in a sense. Why I say so is because this game actually needs you to have a deck of 60 cards, which I think is slightly overkill. I mean, how the hell do I shuffle 60 cards? The box contains 26 cards per deck. The 2 decks are X-men and Brotherhood. Apparently, this set came out when the first X-men film was released. Hence you will notice that most of the characters given in the decks are same to the ones that appeared in the film. Thankfully, the artworks use the costumes of the comics-counterparts.

I won't go through the how-to of this card game, but I'll share about it in general. You can use any characters from any team, such as Brotherhood, and even have a deck containing multiple teams as long as you have team-up cards to allow team bonuses to be shared. I could team up the JLA with the Avengers if I wanted to. From big guns like Superman and Captain America to smaller ones like Morlocks and Outsiders, VS System covers a lot of the Marvel and DC universes.

Through the years VS System tried to give itself a fresh look in terms of card design in order to keep people interested and attract new players. However they must have failed badly because the card game was discontinued a few years back. I have to admit, Singapore did not really promote this game. I only could buy the newer sets from a particular comic shop called Comic Mart at Raffles City, which closed down eventually. That meant that I could no longer buy the newer sets, and had to stick with the older ones which can still be found at card shops around the island.

Every character has multiple versions, hence you can have more of your favourite character in the deck. Take Magneto, for instance. I've 2 different versions of the level 7 Magneto, both with different effects but still just as fearful.

There are many teams to make, such as JLA, Gotham Knights, Teen Titans, X-men, Ultimates, Spider-Friends, Sinister Syndicate, Gotham Inmates, Fantastic Four, Brotherhood, Hellfire Club, Green Lanterns and Avengers. I'm not sure why, but I purchased many of the cards for collecting. I bought boxes of booster packs from many series and many starter decks just to see what cards I'd get and add to my collection.

I made plenty of decks with the cards I got, but I never found anyone to play with. Nobody seemed to play this game, and hence I could only look at the cards and admire their beauty. I think VS System would be better if it was promoted more, their rules a tad simpler, and the deck size reduced to 30. I've been making my decks of 30 cards because I feel that 30 is enough for a game to last. I presume the 60-card size is to merely make chances of getting the cards you want less to... make the game more challenging? I don't know. Either way, as a comic book fan, I feel that this game actually had the potential, but somehow failed horribly due to dumb luck or something. Even the PSP game, Marvel Trading Card Game, was not well-received. And the cards given were the old ones with the new ones only obtainable from downloadable content(which I couldn't get because by the time I tried, the website was closed down).

BATMAN BEYOND!!!!! Love this toy ^^

Road to Nostalgia

Recently my dad's mom passed away. That makes both grandparents from my dad's side gone. Yesterday I got to see some really old photos, as far back as my parents' wedding and nearer ones like me when I was still in Primary school.

Looking at the photos, I see my grandfather, his hair still black, smiling away. He looked so happy, so joyful. This is a total contrast to his last few months, bed-ridden, his body frail and skinny, his words incoherent, his temper foul, and yet, his eyes were the eyes of a sad man, who could do nothing but helplessly wait for his time to come. What changed along the way?

Looking at the photos, I see my grandmother. She had that fierce presence in the photos, like those cunning mother-in-laws you see in those Chinese dramas. Not saying that she is, but that was the best way to describe the air she had. I never really interacted much with her, but the week before she passed away, I visited her once, and as I stared into her eyes, I saw glassy eyes staring back at me, as if searching my soul for something. Maybe she wanted to see if I was worth being the oldest grandson. Personally, I could tell that she was the kind who favored the sons over daughters, and same went for grandchildren. I'm not a big fan of such biasness, which probably was a reason why I never felt (or wanted to be) close to my grandmother. To me, a person's character speaks a lot, whether relative or not. Maybe that's why, all those years, I failed my role as the oldest grandchild (and grandson) in the family tree.  Yet, I am not sure what I'm suppose to do as the oldest. How does one fail if one knows not what he is to achieve?

Looking at the photos, I see my dad. His big smile on his wedding day, with his even bigger glasses. It's some trend in that time I guess. He didn't seem to age much, looking almost the same as the photos, except maybe a bit thinner, probably the result of raising two kids and being a breadwinner of the family. Back then, would he have thought that he would have to bid farewell to his parents? Did he send them off with any regret?

Looking at the photos, I see my mom. She looked so young. And she actually look the same now, except for slight wrinkles from aging. And I found out she gave birth to me when she was only...24? That's quite young, I exclaimed when she told me. But she never went to university, and started working at quite a young age, so I guess 24 was a reasonable age to have a kid. My dad's 5 years ahead of her, by the way. Seeing her in the photo, I wonder what her dreams and ambitions were. Would she realize that she was going to be a housewife, and her only goal in life would be to see her two kids graduate and have promising futures? That is all she seems to ask for in life right now, and sometimes I wish she could be more self-centered and think more for herself.

Looking at the photos, I see myself, so small and innocent, with a big smile showing all my teeth. My mom looked at the photos and told me that it was a long time since I smiled like that. And yes, she was right. That smile I did was the kind that showed the world that I was a happy kid, when nothing else mattered than the now, and that I was having a good life. It was the kind that never bothered about what people think or said about me. It was a carefree smile.

Its nostalgic, looking at the photos. How much we've changed, how much has happened, how people have come and gone in our lives. 21 years since I was born, and here I am today. Makes me wonder what life has planned for me, and how things would be when I look back at the time when I was 21.

Damn Girl...

... why are you so irresistible?

But then again, I decided not to trust my heart anymore.

End Of Recess Week

Well, this week ended so fast it felt more like recess weekend!

Finally uploaded my first mix! I'm honestly not too satisfied with it, mostly because I feel that most of my transits between the songs were horrible. It didn't sound so bad when I was recording it, but it came out that bad. Still, it just motivates me to try harder! Maybe I should record a small mix once a month or something! Make my Soundcloud more active!

Seeing two of my friends getting into relationships makes me wonder will I be like Ted. Obviously trying to look for a girl doesn't work; I've been trying. Maybe my expectations are too... High? But then again, it doesn't seem to bother me much, to my surprise. It's like I don't really bother about it anymore. If it happens, it happens. If not, why worry over it?

Need to start the making of my costume going.

Lots of projects and work to do. Really, really looking forward to the long holidays after this semester!

HKJFKL

For years I notice that KFC is willing to hire people with... some mental issues(sorry if that sounded crude). Like just today, there was a guy working at KFC who kept mumbling to himself. I used to wonder why KFC would hire such people. I mean, c'mon, I once saw a cleaner at KFC apparently shouting at a customer(although everyone simply ignored her). Then I realized that, despite their..."setbacks", these people still try to work and survive. In a way, I've grown to respect them and KFC for actually giving these people a chance to work.

Waikiki was fun! I screwed up my favorite part really badly, but a lot of my friends told me they liked my music! :) The music was a bit too loud though. Pity the archery club whose booth was directly in front of the big speakers!

Saw Cosfest on Sunday, and while some are good, others were... not so good. When I go AFA this year, I'm gonna wow the crowd!!!

Turning Up A Notch

Finally settled my last midterms paper today! Went home to get a well-deserved sleep to make up for my lack of sleep the night before!

Midterms was okay. I totally screwed up my MA paper (got back the paper today), but that's not going to faze me. I'm not too confident with my FA paper, because I kind of spent too much time on the front half. BGS was better than I expected, although it's because of the hard work I put into it(studied till 3 plus in the morning and the paper was 9am). Today's Econs paper was faster than the time given, and I was kind of stoning for quite a bit. I mean, whatever I knew I had poured out onto the paper. Staring at the questions would not make me suddenly know more stuff. So after checking through my answers 4 times, prof said we could submit and leave early. Thank God!

If anything, I kind of woke up. Thanks for sending me that wake-up call. It was like a tight slap across my face, but I appreciate it. Really shook me up. Honest.

Recess week! Gonna use that time to start with all the projects and catch up with my revisions! Rawr!

'Nuff Said

Sure it's weird for me to like all these.

But at least they will never hurt me the way you do.

Batman Beyond

Recently, I went to download the complete series of Batman Beyond, a really old cartoon I used to watch. It came after the The New Batman Adventures, and it portrayed Bruce Wayne as an old man, mentoring a new Batman.

I have to admit, despite my love for the current Batman, I really like the Batman of the future too. I was really impressed with how they created this whole new character from scratch, and the plot to make it that way. And that is why the first two episodes of the Batman Beyond series are the most amazing(and important) episodes to me.

The first few minutes show how Bruce Wayne, whose age was catching up with him, decided to end his career as Batman. Needing to rely on the one thing he swore off, Bruce Wayne realizes that he could no longer fight crime as Batman. This idea, to me, was a really smart situation to make him end his Batman career. Because apart from that, there's possibly no other way to reach that conclusion.

We then move to the future, where we get to meet Terry McGinnis. And the driving point to make that kid want to be Batman: avenge the death of his father.

I somehow cannot help but to feel that it seems rather similar to how Spider-man decided that "With great power, comes great responsibility". Kid comes home, only to find his dad/uncle dead, regrets his last words to his old man, and dons the costume to get vengeance.

In this series, we see Terry juggling his teenage life and life as Batman, not something you get to see with the present-day Batman. This gives a... fresh new feeling of watching Batman. I have to admit, the series is good such that it shows a rookie superhero matures and become the Batman worthy of continuing the legacy.

The best part is that, even after the end of the series, a final episode in the Justice League Unlimited animated series actually acted as a closure for Batman Beyond.

Batman Beyond is somewhat darker, where people are implied to be killed, and plots are not as light-hearted. One good example was the movie, Return of the Joker. However, this series has proven to have really interesting storylines, making it one of the most impressive

Traffic Light Party

Last night was Traffic Light party! And despite being one of the earlier DJs to spin(meaning there was nobody on the dance floor at that time) I still enjoyed spinning and the event was awesome! Never thought I'd get so high at the event! There were a lot of epic moments like that knocked out guy who was left outside the toilet. And the girls there were hot! Well, a number of them.

Mid-terms next week. Bummer.

Valentine's is arriving! As usual, no plans on that day. But for once, I'm actually not bothered (even though I told my friends that we must get a date this year). I'm actually quite tired of trying to pursue, and merely end up hurting myself. It's easy for them girls: if they want you, they keep you dancing around their palm, if not they'll just toss you aside and wait for the next guy that comes along.

And seriously. Why does everyone seem so shocked that I'm single???!!!

If I've learned anything, it's to never trust my heart ever again.

Weekend?

Well, technically this is suppose to be my long weekly weekend, but I've make-up class on Saturday to make up for last Tuesday's lesson which was postponed due to Chinese New Year. Means I've got to wake up at 8:30am in the morning on Saturday! Bummer.

School's been getting exhausting. It feels like I've more readings to do this semester. And as much as I try to tell myself to study harder this semester, I feel like I'm not doing enough. Need to get motivated!

……ペ・ル・ソ・ナ……!!

I finally got Persona 3 and Persona 3: FES to complete my Persona 3 collection! Woots! Didn't manage to get the Persona 4 game (curse you unknown buyer!) but I manage to download the iso, and hope it works! I tried on my PS2 emulator and it seems to run nicely, so here's to hoping for the best!

Now, back to work D:

Save All Data!

Recently, my external hard disk died. It just did. I'm not sure how, because the previous time I used it, it was fine. Apparently my sister did use it before I discovered that it had a problem, so something must have happened during then. All my music, books, comics, shows, PSP games, PC games, movies, photos were all gone, just like that. Years worth of stuff collected and kept nicely in my hard disk, all gone. I felt like those parent who raised his kid from young, just to see the kid die in some freak accident. It tears your heart and all is lost. What's even better is that sites like Megaupload and Fileserve were disappearing, meaning that obtaining all my stuff would prove difficult.

My biggest worry was my music. My iTunes takes its music from my external HDD directly, as I did not want to store my songs in my computer. The size was too much, and I feared that storing my music in the computer would cause it to lag. Now, with the HDD gone, how was I going to get my songs? All my songs in my iPhone would be gone the next time I synced it with iTunes. Does that mean I should never sync it forever? And then it dawned upon me: my last salvation for my music was my iPhone. Stored inside was another copy of of all my music, and that was my best chance to restore my music library!

So I spent an entire night trying various programs that would export all my stuff from my iPhone to my computer. Took me a lot of tries, but just went I was on the verge of giving up, I found a program that answered my prayers. So I downloaded the program, and wanted to transfer it to my laptop via thumbdrive. But somehow, all external devices were write-protected suddenly and I couldn't! So I slowly transferred from my computer to my laptop via Dropbox, which took really long.

*Apparently, I went to change some setting to make that write-protected nonsense, but I managed to solve that issue today^^*

With that program, I managed to save all my songs, except that some of them needed to be edited in iTunes. That settled the music, next was my shows.

Fortunately for me, my old HDD was still working, and in it was quite a lot of my stash of shows, except for recent ones. This helped to soften the blow of the loss of my HDD.

Then I have another source I could tap on to get back my data: friends. I've been sharing stuff like my shows , books and comics to them, so in a way they have a copy of what I lost. That way, I could get them to send me those stuff and in a way salvage more of my data!

Really, Western Digital just ruined my collection. Plus, they charge $800+ to try to retrieve all my data, which my friend already checked and said that all my data were gone already. No way am I spending so much on all the stuff I got for free!

At least, to some extent, crisis averted.
